Short answer
A UPI QR code is just your UPI ID written in a standard format (upi://pay?pa=yourid@bank&pn=YourName&cu=INR) that every UPI app can read. You can make one for free with our QR code generator: choose UPI payment, type your UPI ID and shop name, and download the ready-to-print shop sign. Scan it once with your own UPI app to check the name, then print and laminate it.
What is inside a UPI QR code
There is no secret code and no server involved. The QR simply stores a short text link with up to five pieces of information:
| Part | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
pa |
Payee address: your UPI ID | sharmastores@okaxis |
pn |
Payee name shown to the customer | Sharma Stores |
am |
Amount (optional) | 499.00 |
cu |
Currency | INR |
tn |
Note (optional) | Invoice 123 |
When a customer scans it, their UPI app fills in your UPI ID and name, and asks them to confirm the amount and enter their UPI PIN. The money goes straight from their bank to yours. Because the information is inside the image, a static QR like this never expires.
Step by step: make and print a counter QR
- Find your exact UPI ID. Open your UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or your bank app) and look under Profile or UPI settings. It looks like
name@okaxis,9876543210@yblorshop@paytm. - Open the QR code generator and choose UPI payment.
- Enter the UPI ID and the name you want customers to see. Leave the amount blank for a counter QR, so each customer types their own amount.
- Test it. Scan the code on screen with your own UPI app. Check that the name and UPI ID shown are yours. You can cancel before paying.
- Download the shop sign. “Download shop sign (print)” gives a 1200 × 1650 pixel image with “Scan & Pay”, your name and UPI ID. Print it on A5 or A4. For large standees or banners, download the SVG instead; it stays sharp at any size.
- Laminate it and fix it where you can see it. Keep the code at least 5 cm wide so older phones scan it easily from a normal distance.
Fixed amount or open amount?
- Open amount (recommended for counters): customers type the amount. One QR works for every sale.
- Fixed amount: useful on an invoice, a fee receipt or a WhatsApp message for a specific payment. Add the invoice number in the note field so you can match the payment later.
Personal UPI ID or business UPI?
A QR made from your personal UPI ID works for receiving money. For regular shop sales, the business versions of UPI apps and bank merchant accounts add things a plain QR cannot: payment soundboxes, daily settlement reports, and a clean separation between personal and business money that makes GST and income-tax records easier. Banks also watch for heavy commercial use of savings accounts. If your shop takes many payments a day, ask your bank or UPI app about a merchant account; you can still use this generator to make the printed sign from the merchant UPI ID they give you.
Stay safe: common UPI QR scams
- You never scan a QR or enter your UPI PIN to receive money. If someone “sending” you money asks you to scan their code or enter your PIN, it is a fraud; you would be paying them.
- Check your counter QR every morning. A known trick is sticking a fraudster’s QR on top of a shop’s code. A laminated sign fixed behind glass or tape is harder to tamper with.
- Confirm the payment, not the screenshot. Wait for the credit message, bank notification or soundbox before handing over goods. Fake “payment successful” screens are easy to make.
- Never share your UPI PIN or OTP, including with people claiming to be from your bank or the UPI app.
Other QR codes that help a small business
- WiFi QR for your café or office, so guests join without asking for the password.
- WhatsApp QR on your visiting card or bill, opening a chat with a pre-filled message.
- Contact card QR that saves your name, number and email in one scan.
All of these are in the same QR code generator, and everything is generated in your browser; your UPI ID and WiFi password are not sent to our server.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free? Will the QR stop working later?
Yes, it is free, and no, it will not stop working. It is a static QR; as long as your UPI ID is active, the code works.
Can I use the same QR with GPay, PhonePe and Paytm?
Yes. The upi://pay format is the common UPI standard, so any UPI app can scan it, whichever app your own UPI ID belongs to.
Does this website see my payments?
No. The QR only contains your UPI ID. Payments move between banks over UPI; nothing passes through HisaabTools.
My customer’s app shows a different name. Why?
UPI apps show the name registered with the bank for that UPI ID, which can differ from the name you typed. If it looks wrong, recheck the UPI ID before printing.
HisaabTools is independent and is not affiliated with NPCI, any bank or any UPI app. App and brand names are used only to describe compatibility.
