On-Page SEO Checklist: 25 Checks Before You Publish
Search intent and content
- The page answers one clear question or task that people actually search for
- The answer appears in the first two sentences
- It adds something the top results don’t: data, a tool, an example or first-hand experience
- Facts, prices and rules are current and dated
- Sources are linked for any figure a reader might question
- No filler paragraphs; every heading earns its place
- Written for people; the main phrase appears naturally, not repeatedly
Titles, headings and snippets
- Title tag is about 50–60 characters and leads with the main topic
- Meta description (around 150 characters) states the benefit
- Exactly one H1, matching the page’s purpose
- H2s follow the order a reader would ask questions
- URL is short, lowercase and readable
Links
- Links to 2–5 related pages on your own site
- At least one existing page links to this new page
- Link text describes the destination (not “click here”)
- External links go to authoritative sources; paid links are marked sponsored
Media and experience
- Images are compressed and have descriptive alt text
- The page works well on a phone with no sideways scrolling
- Main content loads fast; nothing jumps around as it loads
- Ads never cover or push down the main content
Technical
- The page is indexable (no stray noindex) and in the XML sitemap
- Canonical URL points to itself
- Structured data matches visible content, with no fake ratings
- FAQ schema only covers questions actually shown on the page
- Author or reviewer and the last-updated date are visible
